Uratex Monoblock, the trusted Filipino plastic furniture brand in the market, amplifies its “Bawal ang Marupok” campaign with a hilarious bang reflecting Filipino values of resilience amidst challenges, facing it with a touch of humor, and finding joy within the struggle.

The landmark initiative “Bawal Ang Marupok” positions Uratex Monoblock as both a trailblazer and a standard of its own, with Uratex Monoblock receiving local certifications from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS), and the only brand to achieve Level 5 certification from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the highest plastic furniture standard in the country. The campaign was launched last year as part of the brand’s 30th anniversary.

In its recent short video advertisement, viewers are transported into a familiar scenario where a young girl, seated on a Uratex Monoblock, is seen admiring her crush from afar. Despite the girl’s funny and over-the-top antics and reactions, the Monoblock remains intact. The girl may have fallen, but the Uratex Monoblock remains firm and reliable, ready to support in any situation—a glaring testament to its durability, quality, and strength, even in the most playful of situations.

“For over 30 years, Uratex Monoblock has continued its promise of providing quality comfort to Filipino homes. With this, our products have surpassed a series of tests, including stress and drop testing, and ergonomic assessments, to ensure the brand's promise,” said Mr. Dindo Medina, Business Unit Director of Uratex Monoblock.

Similar to the girl in the video, we encounter daily scenarios that are often seen as 'marupok' or fragile. Through this campaign, we are reminded to be wise and prioritize the quality and safety that Uratex Monoblock guarantees in every piece. Investing in these sturdy, quality home furniture items is essential to ensure the safety and comfort of your loved ones, backed by a safety seal and reliable seat load capacity. In addition to the certifications, Uratex Monoblock can withstand up to 200 kilograms of weight, equivalent to the weight of three full-grown adults.

Uratex Monoblock offers a diverse range of home essentials that are carefully crafted, ensuring that the brand caters to various consumer preferences and home aesthetics. With common essentials like the 101 Classic, Americana, and Sofie Chair, they offer traditional monoblock chairs found in conventional Filipino households, ensuring that each chair not only retains its familiar appeal, but also upholds Uratex’s standards.

On the other hand, they have a more trendy line that boasts innovative and contemporary designs such as the Olympia Armchair, Charlotte Bistro, and Marciana chair, seamlessly blending functionality and aesthetics and adding a touch of elegance and chicness to every living space.

This shared value of resilience forms the cornerstone of Uratex Monoblock's commitment to delivering products that withstand the test of time, ensuring that every piece enhances the comfort and quality of life for consumers, no matter the decade.

The exclusive manufacturer and distributor of well-loved brands such as Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and Gatorade, PCPPI holds itself accountable to three key pillars in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals: inclusive business, water stewardship, and circular economy.

“Today’s consumers exercise a keener sense of discernment, particularly when it relates to the values of the companies they support,” said Atty. Carina S. Bayon, PCPPI’s Chief Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Officer. “For PCPPI, sustainability has always been at the heart of our operations. PCPPI employees are also encouraged to bring their own reusable utensils at work, like stainless utensils and bamboo tumblers. Water refilling stations are also set up to minimize the use of plastic cups when employees refresh themselves throughout the day. Going digital also allows employees to reduce paper use, as emails, conferencing platforms, and other network-based channels facilitating information exchange and collaboration across PCPPI’s offices nationwide.

Atty. Bayon shared that aside from saving on expenses, implementing sustainability-focused policies in the workplace can contribute to employee health and well-being, as well as a shared sense of purpose. “Achieving sustainability is a shared responsibility—there’s no single team or department that carries it forward. MondelÄ“z International Inspires Inclusion in celebration of the Women’s Month

  • Company leads discussions on diversity, equity and inclusion in the Philippines
  • Celebrating International Women’s Month by joining Women’s Run PH

MondelÄ“z International, a leading global snacks company, proudly inspired inclusion during its Women's Month celebration activities in the Philippines with a commitment to foster Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) inside and outside its workplace. To empower the women in their organization, the Company’s ambition is to continuously grow the number of women leaders in its organization.

Talking, Leading, and Running for Women Empowerment

As part of its commitment to DEI, MondelÄ“z International hosted three (3) events for its colleagues and stakeholders this March. The first one was the "InspireInclusion She-ssions” held last March 4, 2024, which was a panel discussion on empowering women in the workplace. This event served as a platform for thought leaders, advocates, and professionals to engage in dialogue surrounding the vital importance of women's empowerment in today's landscape. The event featured women leaders within the organization from Sales and Manufacturing; as well as external speaker Audrey Dimarucot, mom, entrepreneur, and owner of clothing brand googoo and gaga; and Parañaque City Vice Mayor Joan Villafuerte, who shared her insights on women in government and how to inspire inclusion in the country.

Mondelēz International has called Parañaque City its home for the past 61 years, and the Company looks to its leaders to share insights on promoting DEI.

“The more that people are invited, the more they are involved and the more that they follow policy,” shared Vice Mayor Villafuerte. “For me that is inclusion. It means empowering people to speak up, empowering people to participate, and making them realize that they are part of government.”

In a significant stride towards inclusion, the Company welcomed its first Filipino Woman Managing Director in 15 years: Aleli Arcilla. This milestone not only underscores the Company's commitment to promoting female leadership but also exemplifies the tangible strides towards gender parity within its ranks.

Arcilla was recently herself a panelist during the second event, the “Building Inclusive Workplaces” session hosted by the Makati Business Club last March 1, 2024. "At Mondelez Philippines, we understand that diversity fuels creativity, equity promotes fairness, and inclusion fosters belonging,” said Arcilla “These principles are not just aspirational; they are integral to our workplace culture and essential for driving long-term success in an ever-evolving snacks industry"

In addition to these discussions, MondelÄ“z International sought to show woman power by participating in a third event, the Filipina CEO Circle (FCC) Women's Run PH, further demonstrating its solidarity with the broader movement towards gender equality. Twenty women employees joined the run, proof that women are strong and ready to take on the world. The runners were from different departments, from Finance, Marketing, Sales, HR, and Logistics and was also part of the Company’s wellbeing initiatives.

Calling Women Leaders to the Front

Mondelēz International proudly boasts a leadership composition comprising 69% women, indicative of its steadfast dedication to providing equal opportunities for career advancement and professional growth. In alignment with its broader commitment to Economic Inclusion and Supplier Diversity (EISD), the Company also collaborates with women-owned businesses within its supply chain. Through training and empowerment sessions, the goal of the engagement is to help support the growth of these businesses.

Through these initiatives and achievements, Mondelēz International reaffirms its steadfast commitment to fostering a workplace culture that celebrates diversity, champions equity, and ensures the inclusion of all voices.

NBDB urges focus on readership and literacy initiatives; ramps up efforts to boost reading among Filipinos

The National Book Development Board (NBDB) urges policymakers, educators, community leaders, and stakeholders to prioritize readership and literacy initiatives, while also involving parents in efforts to make reading more accessible to all segments of the population

This call follows the release of the 2023 National Readership Survey (NRS) results, showing a notable decline in non-school book readership among Filipino adults and children. The survey revealed adult readership at 42% and children at 47% in 2023. Access to books emerged as the primary reason for the decline, with limited awareness of public libraries and constraints like time and distance cited as barriers to visits.

These results have prompted the NBDB to reaffirm its commitment to bolstering existing programs and policies to reignite a love for reading among Filipinos.

“These findings, which provide a much-needed nuanced understanding of Filipinos’ reading habits and preferences, reinforce the fact that access to quality books remains a pressing issue in book publishing and education, so the sectors’ focus now clearly has to be on addressing gaps in access,” said NBDB Chairperson Dante “Klink” Ang II.

Moreover, Chairperson Ang stated that the NBDB and its partners will examine various proposals to develop meaningful policy directives aligned with the objectives of Republic Act No. 7743, which aims to establish congressional, city, and municipal libraries, along with barangay reading centers nationwide. According to a 2018 study by the National Library of the Philippines, only 3% of LGUs have local libraries across the country.

“One of the main hindrances to reading revealed by the survey is access to reading facilities such as public libraries, particularly in the provinces. Some of them are really beyond the reach of those living in mountainous areas, for example. Besides expanding the Book Nook project, we will also work to bring libraries closer to the people,” Chairperson Ang added.

Meanwhile, NBDB Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade emphasized the significance of enhancing NBDB's readership efforts, particularly through initiatives like the Book Nook project. This project establishes reading and storytelling centers across the Philippines, featuring locally published books and serving as distribution hubs for publishers. By offering quality books in various Philippine languages, the Book Nook project addresses access and literacy issues in a single space, fostering education and community engagement in a safe and inclusive environment where visitors can participate in activities, borrow books, and take them home at no cost.

Additionally, the Philippine Book Festival (PBF) promotes a robust reading culture while providing guidance on institutional book purchases. Like the Book Nook project, the PBF brings quality books to readers nationwide while facilitating collaboration between major buyers of educational resources and Philippine publishers.

To encourage involvement in the local book economy, NBDB launched Booklatan sa Bayan, inviting both avid and passive readers to explore literature and culture. NBDB collaborates with reading advocacy groups such as the Reading Association of the Philippines, the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc., and the Adarna Group Foundation, Inc., to synergize efforts in enriching the nation's reading culture.

“Programming must work hand in hand with policy. Besides readership programs, we will push for policies that democratize distribution and enable publishers to publish more affordable books,” Executive Director Tugade emphasized.

“These survey findings should serve as a call to arms: an opportunity to acknowledge and better understand the current state of readership, to reframe the problems they pose in a way that we are pushed to act and change them rather than dwell on them. If attitudes toward reading are less than desirable, then the responsibility to create environments that make reading possible lies with us. The NBDB is hopeful and renews its commitment to better its programs and policies,” Executive Director Tugade added.

The NBDB highlighted that, according to the survey findings, overall attitudes towards books and reading remained positive. The majority of respondents recognized the importance of books beyond educational and professional contexts. Key insights from the survey included the most popular non-school book (NSB) genres among adults (the Bible) and children (picture books), the preferred reading language (Filipino for both age groups), preferred formats (printed books for both age groups), and primary considerations when selecting NSBs (availability for both age groups).

The NBDB enlisted the Social Weather Stations (SWS) to conduct the 2023 National Readership Survey from November 14th to 20th, 2023, with a sample size of 2,400 adults aged 18 and above, and 2,400 children aged 8-17. This survey is the most comprehensive examination of Filipinos' reading habits and preferences and is expected to provide invaluable insights for the agency's readership-focused initiatives.

Five Books to Read this Women's Month

Women's History Month, celebrated in March in many countries including the Philippines is dedicated to honoring and recognizing the contributions and achievements of women throughout history. The celebration emerged from the recognition that women's roles and contributions to society have often been overlooked, marginalized, or minimized.

This month, we strive to recognize the achievements of women in various fields, including science, politics, literature, arts, sports, and more. It sheds light on the significant contributions women have made to society, often in the face of adversity and discrimination.

It is also a great opportunity to helps raise awareness about the ongoing struggle for gender equality and women's rights. It serves as a reminder of the progress that has been made, as well as the work that still needs to be done to achieve full equality and empowerment for women worldwide. Hoping inspire and empower women and girls by showcasing role models and historical figures who have broken barriers, challenged stereotypes, and paved the way for future generations. It encourages women to pursue their dreams and ambitions, regardless of societal expectations or limitations.

However, maintaining good health and shifting to a healthier lifestyle have always been key goals for many Filipinos including us. Val and I promised that aside from eating nutritious meals and getting more exercise, we'd also look for better dietary options that allow us to enjoy our favorite meals without compromising flavor.

Getting Secondhand Car Financing at M Lhuillier is easy as 1-2-3

Did you know that more than 85% of the households in the Philippines do not have their own cars?

According to a 2022 survey published in Statista.com, about 11% of the households or only 2 out 20 Filipinos own either a car, jeep, or van.  So yes, despite the traffic and the number of vehicles we see on the roads everyday, there is still a huge gap since only a number of Filipinos actually have their own cars. The cars that we see on the road are owned by the same households who are privileged to have multiple vehicles.

Why? Is it difficult to buy a car in the Philippines?

Many Filipinos do not have their own cars for various reasons. However, it is said that it is no longer difficult to buy a car nowadays. In fact, the car industry has been very generous to provide a lot of promotions such as low downpayment and monthly fees in order to make it affordable and accessible for the average Filipino.

Financial services have tremendously improved too. Aside from banks, there are also many financial institutions who now offer car loans, providing Filipinos more options in getting their dream car.

For example, M Lhuillier, who is available not just in commercial areas but also in relatively low-key communities, and far-flung barangays provides opportunities for all Filipinos to get their dream car through their ML Quick Car Loan service.

Can you tell me more ML Quick Car Loan?

ML Quick Car Loan service is the solution to your cash problems by providing a straightforward process in getting a car loan. It is known for its flexibility in loan terms and competitive interest rates.

This service can be used to:

  • Buy a second-hand car

  • Refinance your existing vehicle/ use it as a collateral to get a loan

Wow! That’s amazing. Can you tell me more about buying a second-hand car?

More and more customers are opting to buy second-hand cars for different reasons. The most common one is practicality since second-hand cars are more affordable and cheaper given that the bulk of depreciation already occurred. Insurance rates are also lower compared to brand new units.

This is something that M Lhuillier understands since not all banks offer second-hand car financing. Through ML Quick Car Loan, you can now apply for car financing for units with year/model 2013 and up.

** Please note that the unit/ year should not exceed 10 years upon maturity of the loan.

Who is qualified to get a loan?

This is available for those who are locally employed, OFWs, pensioners and self-employed individuals with proof of income, or a pensioner with proof of pension payments.

What are the financing terms?

Client will pay the dealer 30% of the appraised value and the remaining 70% of the appraised value, M Lhuillier will pay to the dealer.

The maximum term is 3-4 years. Chattel fee and Comprehensive insurance are required.

How do I apply for a ML Quick Car Loan?

The application is as easy as 1-2-3.

1.  Check if you are qualified for ML QCL Pre-owned Car Financing.

2.  Pick a second-hand car from a legit dealer. Units from Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Ford, Suzuki, and Nissan are accepted. Once you have chosen a vehicle, Pay 30% of the cost as downpayment.

Book Feature: Mula sa Kilometer Zero (“From the Kilometer Zero”) + Exclusive Author Interview with Josue Mapagdalita

Have you wondered what makes a book a great read?

Does it have something to do with the number of pages, or the complexity of the author's choice of words?

Is it about the storyline, the plot, the twists and all the surprises in between?

or is it about being relatable, one that brings back memories, something that makes us understand ourselves more?

If answered the last one, then we just have the book for you!

“Mula sa Kilometer Zero” (from the Kilometer Zero) is a collection of 38 Filipino flash fiction written by Josue Mapagdalita. All the fictional stories included in the collection are set in Metro Manila and are guaranteed to stir your emotions. It speaks the realities of an ordinary person - the same challenges, heartbreaks and truths that we also have where we can find both comfort, inspiration and a fresh prespective of life.

These stories are written in Filipino/ Taglish which makes it very relatable. One thing we like about the book is that the author deliberately included the locality of the places mentioned so, by reading, you also get learn something about these stops (places) from Kilometer Zero.

It was written by Josue Mapagdalita, a young author who holds a degree in political science and a cum laude from the University of the Philippines. He currently works as a product manager at one of the top fintech companies in the Philippines. Author Josue also once served as an innovation manager of a California-based treatment facility for substance use disorders (SUDs) and co-occurring mental disorders.

Today, we are grateful to have this opportunity to have this exclusive interview with him.

1. Can you share with us something about the book that isn't in the blurb?

The stories of “Mula sa Kilometer Zero” are stories of the ordinary people and are expected to hit close to home. All characters have no names and genders. All stories are set in Metro Manila and have the titles of streets within Metro Manila.

“Mula sa Kilometer Zero” relies on romance to allow readers to explore the human condition. It also tackles poverty, burnout, complicated grief, generational trauma, the complexity of relationships, memory, and nostalgia.

2. What inspired the idea for your latest book?

I am a very clumsy person. One day, I was taking photos of the surrounding areas of Luneta Park when I accidentally bumped the Kilometer Zero marker. (I even got a lump on my forehead!) That’s where the first story, “Roxas”, was conceptualized. I realized also that all streets are connected to the Kilometer Zero one way or another (like intestines), so I walked on the other streets, remarkable or not, to write the other 37 stories, with the last one written in 2023.

3. How long did it take you to write this book?

My life as a corporate slave led to creative slumps, so it took me 6 years to finish the book.

4. What part of the book was most challenging to write and why?

The most challenging part is the book’s overarching theme, ambiguity. In “Mula sa Kilometer Zero”, the characters have no names and even gender. At the start, I had difficulty writing the stories because of the difficulty to identify the characters. But just like in any experiment, I still found ways to make it work.

The experiment is a success as my readers so far can enter not only the scenes but the characters as well regardless of their gender and upbringing.

5. What do you hope your readers take away from this book?

The book emphasizes that we have our own battles and stories but all of us are connected by an invisible thread. So, I hope that through the book, my readers will realize that whatever they are going through, they are not alone.

6. If you’re planning a sequel or write the next book, can you share a tiny bit about your plans for it?

The book is intended to become a series. Currently, I am writing its two sequels, namely "Mula sa Kilometer Zero, Hanggang sa Dulo ng Mundo: Thailand" and "Mula sa Kilometer Zero, Hanggang sa Dulo ng Mundo: Japan". (I know the titles are too long but I'm still working on them!)

As the titles suggest, the settings of books two and three are Thailand and Japan respectively. I went to these countries to write the stories and to finish the entire books, I need to return to them.

7. Where can we buy your books?

Signed copies can be bought on TikTokShop, Shopee, and Lazada: https://linktr.ee/josue.mapagdalita

It is also available via 8letters Bookstore, Mt. Cloud Bookshop and now in Fully Booked (Boni High Street branch) too.

8. Where can readers find out more about you and your books?

You can also follow me through in FB, through my personal account https://www.facebook.com/j.mapagdalita and the book's page,

Thank you, Author Josue for agreeing to this interview. We are happy to know more about your book and we are excited for the upcoming sequel.
