7 Secrets and Tips You Should Know When Visiting Hongkong Disneyland

We just got home from Hong Kong and spent 2 days in Disneyland to celebrate my mom's birthday. There is no doubt that it is the happiest place on earth. I was crying while watching Mickey and the Wondrous Book show (tears of joy!) However, visiting Hongkong Disneyland is also one of the most tiring experiences I had in my whole life. Seriously, my feet are so tired that I could barely walk once we're back at the hotel.

Anyway, for those who are planning to visit, let me share some tips on how you can make the most out of your Disneyland experience.

1. Visit the City Hall

Don't forget to drop by the City Hall. It is located in Town Square on Main Street, U.S.A., close to the Main Entrance to the park. They handle customer service concerns as well as provide assistance in dining reservations, currency exchange, and park information. There is also an ATM in case you need one.

For first time visitors, you can ask them for a First Time Visitor Badge. If it's your birthday, you can also get a special Birthday Badge from Disneyland.

2. Fastpass Service

Fastpass Service is a ticketing system that virtually “saves” your place in the queue for some of your favorite attractions. This allows you to enjoy the park and then come back to the attraction during the return time printed on your FASTPASS Ticket. This is absolutely free though not all attractions have it.

Currently, it is available for Hyperspace Mountain, The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh and Iron Man Experience.

3. Use Coupons for Discounted Meals
Don't forget to get a free copy of the Hong Kong 20th Anniversary Coupon Booklet to enjoy deals around the city. This is available at the Hong Kong International Airport Visitor Centre and in selected hotels and inns in the city. Use the Disneyland coupon and get 20% off from meals. These are accepted in all dining outlets at the park.

4. Prepare Your Rain Gear
It was raining during our 2-day visit but that did not stop us from enjoying the park. Though there are rain ponchos for sale (approximately HK$ 55), it would be cheaper and more practical to bring your own rain poncho which is cheaper if bought outside.

5. Shop at Professor Porter's Trading Posts
Most shops sell identical items but one should not miss the chance to shop at Professor Porter's where you can score great deals and sale items. Can you imagine getting discounts from 50-70% off when you buy 2 or 4 items?

I was able to get Mickey Mouse shoes for only HK$50 (regular price of HK$ 298) and shirts at 70% off. I got a couple of Star Wars shirts for Val at HK$60 each instead of the regular price of HK$ 198.

6. Skip the line at the Disneyland Railroad

One should not miss taking the Disneyland Railroad to get a complete tour around the park. This is the first attraction you will see when entering the park making it really crowded in the morning. Thus, it is suggested that you take the ride in the afternoon or instead, board from the Fantasyland station rather at the Main Street.

7. Purchase Discounted Disneyland Tickets

Get your Disneyland tickets at a discounted rate from Klook. One day pass is available for only HK$ 540 (Original Price is HK$ 589) Plus, Klook coupons also allow you to proceed directly to the entrance and skip the long queue.

How about you? Do you have something to share about your Hongkong Disneyland experience? Feel free to comment below.

Road Trip: Manila to Bacolod

When Val and I relocated to Bacolod to say goodbye to the crazy pollution, endless traffic, and fast-paced Metro Manila life, I admit it was not easy. Moving away meant we are letting go of our current jobs and the many opportunities that we have in  Manila. Not to mention that we'll be missing our friends and loved ones too.

But hey, we are so ready to take our married life to the next level and get ready for a new adventure!

Our whole new adventure starts with our "epic" journey. It is the longest land trip I have ever taken. Normally, it should take you 18-20 hours only however, Val and I made a lot of stops thus, our trip was a bit longer than usual.

We left around 12:30am bound for Batangas via SLEX and Star Tollways. We wanted to leave a bit late to avoid the traffic in EDSA since we're from way up North. We arrived at the Batangas port around 4:00am but we were late for the RORO trip and waited for the next one at 5am. While waiting, we just decided to have some breakfast.

We left Batangas port around 5:30am bound for Calapan, Mindoro. It was actually the best time to travel since we are in the middle of the sea during sunrise, Watching the sunrise was a liberating experience as it marked the beginning of our new adventure.

Even Crumpy enjoyed the trip since you can feel the wind brushing against your skin.

We arrived at Calapan Port around 8:30am and we are up for another 3-hour drive going to Roxas City port. This is our first time in this place and honestly, do not have any idea where to go. Our game plan was just to follow the signs (which was sufficient and very helpful) plus our handy google maps. The road condition is good. Kudos to the nautical highway project!

We passed several small towns and stopped for drinks and gas along the way.

We reached Roxas City port around 11:30am but unfortunately, the next RORO bound for Caticlan will leave by 3:30pm. I guess that means we have ample time to rest and eat before the next trip. Since we barely know the place, we opted to have lunch at Andok's (quite a popular food establishment in Metro Manila and Visayas) and we had a simple rice and bbq meal. Andok's is just very near the port.

During our trip, the sun was scorching hot and we felt really uneasy. So, Val and I decided to use the port's shower room for Php 20.00/head and that was really helpful.

Our trip from Roxas to Caticlan was quite long (approximately 5 hours) via Montenegro Shipping Lines. We were already tired and sleepy but had no place to really rest. It was actually very crowded, especially in the canteen area. Anyway,  Val and I decided to stay on the uppermost part of the ship.

We are were also very lucky to see the beautiful sunset in the later part of the trip.

We arrived in Caticlan around 8:30pm and we decided to stay overnight there. Unfortunately, all hotels and inns are fully booked because of the APEC Summit and we did not have any reservations. We tried to ask a few locals for suggestions and they recommended that we travel all the way to Kalibo proper to get a room.

It took us approximately 2 hours to get to Kalibo. The roads are too dark and no light posts are available. There wasn't any signage on the road (unlike the ones in Mindoro.) On the brighter side, there were checkpoints and PNP outposts every 1 km because of the APEC Summit. So, at least we were able to ask for directions every now and then.

You would know that you have reached Kalibo once you pass by the famous Kalibo bridge. Unfortunately, I was so tired and it was dark that we weren't able to take pictures. We were lucky enough to find a pet-friendly inn immediately during the night. I made a separate review of the inn, here.

Thank God we were able to rest from that super long trip! We've been awake for more than 24 hours already. :)

Around 10pm the next day, we decided to continue the drive going to Dumangas port. It is best to travel during the day because the roads are quite confusing with all the turns and no signages. You'll be able to pass by Capiz before you reach Iloilo. We actually had lunch in Capiz since there's a Mang Inasal and Deco's in Mambusao proper.

We reached Dumangas port around 3PM and did not expect the problem getting into the RORO. Apparently, one of the ships of Montenegro broke down and Tristar would need a reservation a day before. Our only chance is cancellations of reserved slots or no-shows.

We spent the afternoon chatting with other travelers and I can say we had made friends along the way. We learned that some of them have been there for a week but can't get their trucks on board because it's fully booked. Just like us, they are on the waitlist. Being on the waitlist, not only means "first come first served" but they are also considering the size of your vehicle. We got lucky and got on board around 8:00pm and then finally, arrived in Bacolod around 11:30pm.

About the fees and expenses, here's what we actually paid (prices as of May 2015)

Toll Fee ( SLEX)  - Php 164.00 + 96.00
Toll Fee ( Star Tollways) - Php 67.00

Batangas Roro Terminal Fee - Php 129.00
Additional Passenger (Terminal) - Php 30.00
RORO Fee via Asian Marine (Batangas - Calapan) - Php 1,440.00

Roxas Roro Terminal Fee - Php 129.00
Toll Fee (Roxas City) - Php 50.00
Coast Guard Fee - Php 20.00
Entrance Fee - Php 30.00
RORO Fee via Montenegro (Roxas - Caticlan) - Php 3,840.00
Additional Passenger (RORO) - Php 408.00

Dumangas Port Roro Terminal Fee - Php 129.00
RORO Fee via Tristar - Php 800.00

Bacolod/BREDCO Terminal Fee - Php 375.50

Well, it was costly and tiring but the experience is all worth it. Indeed, it was "our adventure of a lifetime."

#WHERETONEXT : SADDLEBACK HAVEN

Summer has officially started. It simply means packing our bags, getting out of the house and enjoying a much-deserved vacation.

With the right research and timing, no one has a concrete excuse of not being able to afford a vacation. We have so many options nowadays including the free seats offered by airlines and no more fuel surcharge.

I have always dreamed of spending one summer vacation is a mountain haven but I do not have the courage to go mountain climbing. I want to be close to nature yet keeping the luxuries. Something cozy, inspiring and perfect.

So, do you have any guesses about our #WHERETONEXT destination?

Well, it's part of the 7,107 islands of the Philippines and it's going to be at the SADDLEBACK HAVEN.

SADDLEBACK HAVEN is a villa 2,800 feet above sea level. It is a 45-minute drive from Davao City.

It features cool climate, fresh air, and lush greenery. The view at night is also breathtaking.

The rooms are carefully designed to ensure that you'll have a good night sleep and prepare you for a day full of activities.

Since part of our plan is to be close to nature, we are very excited to take a short hike nearby.

If you are brave enough to face the cool weather, you can even take a dip in the nearby river.

Horseback riding is also available but I am still undecided about it. I am only certain that I will be bringing lots of marshmallows because I am looking forward to spending the night underneath the stars and enjoy the bonfire.

So, go ahead and have the vacation you have always dreamed of and feel at home with your #WhereToNext destination. It's about time you pack your bags and enjoy the world.

Bacolod's Freelancers Hub: Dojo 8 Coliving Space

Coworking spaces are very important to freelancers like me. If you are not so sure what I am talking about, a coworking space is a place with a shared working environment like an office or something like a study area at home. The only difference is that the people using it are usually not employed by the same company or organization.

Though there are a lot of variations in terms of the ambiance or atmosphere, a strong and fast internet connection, as well as a reliable generator (in case of power outages), are constant in coworking spaces.

I was still in Manila when I started using coworking spaces. There is no doubt that the availability of these work areas has saved me every time there are power outages or internet failure and I cannot afford to miss work. Thus, when we moved to Bacolod, it was one of the things I looked for ASAP.

Luckily, we were able to find Dojo 8 Coworking Spaces. It is located at Lacson Street, Bacolod near Starbucks Lacson. The place is very accessible and rates are really cheap. Not to mention they offer unlimited coffee. Then earlier this year, they opened their second branch at the back of Bar 21 named Dojo 8 Coliving Spaces.  By the way, this is not a sponsored post.

Dojo 8 Coliving Spaces is not your typical coworking space. So, let me share with you the top 5 things why it is so popular among freelancers and students.

1. Overnight Accommodation - Dojo 8 have rooms available in case you need to stay overnight. They are very spacious, clean and affordable. It is also very ideal for travelers who still need to work and can't really rely on their hotel's wifi service. My friends from Dumaguete stayed at Dojo 8 for quite a number of times and they love it.

2. Location - They are located in the heart of Bacolod City. As mentioned, they are at the back of Bar 21, a restaurant that provides a fusion of Filipino delicacies combined with Italian and American favorites (You can read about our Bar 21 Review here) and Bob's Cafe just across the street. There is also a Japanese restaurant a few steps away.

3. Recreational  Facilities and Fun Environment - Dojo 8 provides ping pong tables and other outdoor games. They also have the garden area and some chairs outside which means that you have options on where you want to stay. You're not just limited to an air-conditioned room sitting on a chair.

4. Pet-Friendly - As a fur parent, this meant a lot to me. At Dojo 8, you can work while your dogs play on the lawn. No need to leave our furbabies alone at home. Thus, I am looking forward to bring Crumpy, Cheesecake, and Cinderella soon. (I am thinking if we would be allowed to visit together or there is a limit on the number of dogs one can bring.)

5. Events - Dojo 8 Coliving Spaces is now central to freelancer events here in Bacolod. They hold both free and paid seminars and workshops. Last January 2016, they had the HOW TO START A HOME-BASED CAREER SEMINAR organized by The Purple Secretary and last May 12, the Freelancer Meet-up organized by the Digital Career Advocates of the Philippines.

And aside from all of these, I love working at Dojo 8 because you get to be surrounded by like-minded people who want to be productive.

So, don't forget to follow Dojo 8 Coliving Spaces on Facebook for event updates and promotions. How about you? Do you have your own favorite freelancer spot?

Road Trip: Bacolod to Cebu

I was so surprised to discover that traveling from Bacolod to Cebu by land is very easy. We were used to flying so, it was only last Mother's Day weekend that I decided to give it a try.

Our route was Bacolod to San Carlos Port (by land), San Carlos to Toledo (via RORO or water taxi) and Toledo to Cebu (by land.)

If you plan to bring your own car, the fastest route going to San Carlos Port is through the via Don Salvador Benedicto highway. Travel time is approximately 2.5 hours though you might be interested in spending a few hours in the area to enjoy it. You may read about our short Don Salvador Benedicto adventure, here

If you plan to take the Ceres bus going to Cebu, then you have two options:

A. Take a direct trip (BCD - Cebu)

This means that you don't have to transfer buses and purchase your RORO ticket separately. However, travel time is longer since they take the slower RORO. Estimated travel time by direct trip is 7-8 hours.

Here is the schedule: (subject to change without notice)

1:30 AM
4:00 AM
6:45 AM
9:30 AM
12:00 NN
2:30 PM
9:30 PM

Fare: Php 505.00 and if you have questions, here is the contact number of the Ceres South Bus Terminal - (034) 4329427 / 09177711212

B. Take separate trips

1. Take the bus from Bacolod to San Carlos via Don Salvador Benedicto
Travel time is 2.5 hours
Fare: Php 144.00

They have buses leaving every few minutes. We took this option since we did not make it to the 12NN BCD-CEB direct trip. When choosing this option, inform the driver or conductor that you will be going to the pier. Once you reach San Carlos, they will be dropping you at the tricycle terminal.

Take a tricycle going to the Port and ask the driver to drop you at the Fastcat or RORO ticketing office. Fare is only Php 20.00

2. Ride a water taxi or Fast Cat from San Carlos Port to Toledo Port

There are also several options traveling from San Carlos to Toledo. I highly suggest you take the Fast Cat. (This is not a sponsored post.) It is not your usual "fastcraft" that can only accommodate passengers but cars and motorcycles can take the Fast Cat too. It is new, clean and fast. Travel time is only 1 hour.

Rates start at Php 150 for Economy, Php 200 for Premium Economy (Airconditioned) and Php 250 for the Business Class. I took the Business Class since it's cooler, not so crowded and it comes with a free light snack.

Senior Citizens and children are entitled to discounts and those below 3 years old are free of charge. If you are bringing your car, an SUV/ AUV will cost you Php 1,535.00 while a sedan's rate is Php 1,139.00.

For a complete schedule of trips, you may visit Fast Cat's website.

Also, don't forget to pay the terminal fee is Php 20.00 per passenger.

Additional Tip: If you plan to just leave your car in San Carlos Port, the overnight parking fee is only Php 34.00.

UPDATED on 10/28/17: Due to change in San Carlos Port's Management, overnight parking is no longer allowed.

3. Ride a passenger van from Toledo - Cebu City

Once you reach Toledo port, take a tricycle going to the bus or v-hire terminal for Php 10.00. Since most of the buses are non-aircon, I highly suggest that you take a passenger van. Fare is only Php 100.00 per person and travel time is 1.5 hours - 2 hours only.

Additional Tip: Mcdonalds is just walking distance from Toledo port in case you're hungry.

If you plan your trip carefully and minimize wait time, you can reach Cebu in 6 hours. It actually has a very minimal difference if you travel by plane. Since BCD-Silay Airport takes 1 hour, the pre-departure wait time is 2 hours, flying time is 1 hour and Mactan Airport to Cebu City takes 1.5-2 hours due to traffic.

Do you have any other questions? Feel free to comment below or send us a message at Facebook.

What is the Best Pasalubong from Bacolod? No, It's not Piaya.

Bacolod has always been my favorite summer destination. We loved the city so much that we decided to move here for good.

The first time I was able to visit this beautiful city was around 20 years ago and I have very significant memories that made me come back here often. One is the old "pala-pala" or market along San Juan St. corner North Capitol Road. It is like "Dampa" in Metro Manila and they serve the best garlic and butter shrimps I have ever tasted. Second is the flat piaya that has been a popular sweet treat from the city of smiles.

For years, I have always thought that Piaya which was either in original flavor or ube is the "best" pasalubong that you can bring from Bacolod. However, after moving here in 2015, I was surprised to discover that there is another delicacy which is really good and is actually the BEST PASALUBONG THAT YOU SHOULD BRING FROM BACOLOD CITY.

It is called NAPOLEONESIt is a layered puff pastry filled with custard cream and glazed with white sugar on top. There are several pasalubong centers making this thus, we decided to conduct the ultimate test to find out which one is the best. After comparing the 5 different napoleones we tasted, we can say that MERZCI makes the Best Napoleones here in the city of smiles.

Box of 16 - Php 135

Thus, if you are visiting Bacolod especially this Masskara Festival, you might want to bring this piece of Bacolod with you as pasalubong to your family and friends. MERZCI has a total of 50 branches in Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Panay. They also have branches at the Bacolod - Silay Airport and Bredco Port in case you don't have the time to buy.

Aside from Napoleones, we also recommend these MERZCI pasalubong treats. I can guarantee #TananManamit. (Everything is delicious.)

About Merzci

It is a family business that started in 1995 and a market brand of CM & Sons Food Products, Inc. It began as a small bakery supplying bread to single stores in Libertad Market in Bacolod City and soon evolved to produce pasalubong products, water, and fast food serving delicious and affordable food.

You may visit their website for more details.

---------------------------------------

Now, here is the best part! Since I want you to try these delicious treats from Bacolod City, we're running a giveaway where you can get the chance to win goodies from MERCZI. The mechanics are very simple and it's open to anyone who has a Philippine address.

Will announce the winner on October 21st in time for the celebration of the Masskara Festival here. Goodluck!

Congratulations, Bernard! Kindly message us on Facebook with your name, shipping address and contact number.

What Pasalubong to Bring from Davao City?

Whenever we travel for business or leisure, it is natural for us to buy pasalubong for families and friends. Key chains, shirts and small trinkets are very common. However, if you are visiting Davao City then there is only one pasalubong that will complete your Davao experience.

Apo ni Lola Durian Delicacies has grown strong over the years to become the No. 1 pasalubong must-have. It's main branch is located at 28 San Miguel Village, Matina, Davao City. They are famous for their delicious durian candies available in different flavors.

Their best seller is actually the candy bar available in different variants too. I super love the Creamy Durian Bar and the Mangosteen Yema Bar. These are highly recommended because they are so yummy that you would love to have a big chunk of it.

You have to make sure that you get some durian and mangosteen tarts too. They are actually my favorites. The crust are always freshly baked and the filling is just perfect.

Recently, they have expanded their array of products. Apo ni Lola Durian Delicacies also offers Durian Pie (which I am going to review in a different post), Durian Jam and Durian Hopia.

On a tight budget? You don't have to worry because their products are very affordable.

For orders, inquiries and deliveries, you may contact them at 09204103333 or 082-2895099. They also have a branch in Abreeza Mall.

And now, I am running a quick giveaway so, that one of my readers will have the chance to taste these yummy treats from Apo ni Lola Durian Delicacies. Just follow the mechanics found in the rafflecopter widget. Don't forget to tag My Metro Lifestyle and Apo ni Lola Durian Delicacies in your shared posts and follow all the steps in rafflecopter so, that your entries will be valid.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

I will announce the winner on April 19 and the winner would have to reply within 24 hours. This will be a quick giveaway because I have to send the prize as soon as possible.

UPDATE: CONGRATULATIONS, JIM MACARAEG! Please send me PM on facebook with your shipping details within 24 hours!
