I lost my baby this Christmas!

It's been 21 days since I lost my furbaby, Crumpy. He is my 17-year-old Maltese who has been with me for almost half my life. He passed away due to old age.

I had him right after college and he was there in all the milestones in my life like landing my first corporate job, getting married, relocating to Manila, and later on in Bacolod, etc. I celebrated all these happy moments including all our birthdays and Christmases with him. With every major change --- he was there.

Actually, even in the "not-so-happy moments," we were in it together too and he helped me get through it. I was able to get through "adulting" because I had a dog to take care of. In my darkest moments when I just want to end it all, he gave me a reason for living because all I would think of is "who would take care of him when I am gone?"

And now.. 2 days before Christmas, my heart is empty. I have never felt more alone. I have a supportive husband and a loving family however when it's all quiet, the feeling of loss creeps in and I just miss him so bad.

No matter how much I love Christmas. It's just so hard to be merry and bright at this time of the year. I am the type of person who gets excited to put up Christmas decorations as early as September 1st but now, we don't even have a Christmas tree.

The past 3 weeks were a blur. I barely remember anything aside from working. To be honest, I feel like a robot. And now that we are on a holiday break, everything starts to sink in.

I miss you, Baby Crumpy. I really do.

For now, let me just quote what Ed Sheeren said, "I wish that heaven had visiting hours and I would ask them if I could take you home."

'WORST Experience of being a Dog Owner' - Hope this will not happen to you!

'Deciding whether to euthanize your dog or not' is the WORST experience any fur parent will have.

If you are new to my blog, Crumpy is my 18-year-old furbaby. Due to old age, his health has been declining for the past few months. The normal life span of his breed is just 12-15 years old so, somehow you know that he is nearing the end. We have been working with our vet for the past few months but sadly, there is just so much we can do. Despite all the interventions and care, we do not see any improvements. He is not sick with a disease or fatal illness like parvo, etc. but his body functions are slowly shutting down. It is only a miracle that can save us now.

Our vet is PRO-life and I am happy that we are aligned in keeping Crumpy as comfortable as possible, however, being so helpless seeing your loved one suffer --  you will want to try and do everything. So, we visited another vet for a second opinion and to see if there is still anything else we can do for Crumpy.

Then, I heard the most painful medical advice -- it's time you euthanize your dog.

The doctor is brutally frank and had been trying to convince us that it is the right thing to do. However, I can't find the courage in my heart to make the decision.

Am I being selfish? Am I just prolonging his suffering? What if there is still a chance? (If you read the book, The Choice by Nicholas Sparks, it will teach you to never lose hope even if there is zero chance of survival.)

And to tell you -- I honestly don't have answers. I am lost and this is just the worst. I wish no one will have to go through what I am going through right now.

So, if you are a fur parent, spend time with your dogs. Hug them and let them know that you love them so much. We have our friends, jobs, hobbies, gadgets, etc. but our dogs, they only have us. Their lives revolve solely around us.

After all, your dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.

How to Prevent Heatstroke in Dogs?

The summer heat is definitely here. Everybody is just posting and shouting out in their social media accounts how hot it is nowadays.

According to PAGASA, the heat index registered at 39 degrees last March 8 and 9. In this case, we are advised to be careful as extreme heat can affect not just us but our dogs and other pets as well.

Based on studies, more than 100 deaths of dogs is reported every year due to heatstroke. This condition happens when our dogs are unable to regulate their body temperature. Early signs include inability or unwillingness to move around. Other signs of heatstroke in dogs include drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, mental dullness or loss of consciousness, uncoordinated movement, and collapse.

We may not be able to control the temperature however, we can still do something to prevent heatstroke from happening to us and our dogs. Here are reminders to all pet owners:

1. Always make sure your pets have available clean drinking water to avoid dehydration.

2. Make sure they are not directly under the sun.

3. If you leave them inside the room alone with no cooling device (e.g. fan, aircon) make sure that you leave a wet towel where they can lie down on. You can also leave the windows open if that's possible.

4. Give more frequent baths.

5. Keep in mind our pets are highly prone to heatstroke.

We must all remember that if we find it hot, so do our pets. Let us all be responsible pet owners, share the word and let's go for zero casualty due to heatstroke this summer.

City Mayors who bring hope for man's best friend

As a mom of 3 dogs, I have always been concerned about animal welfare. My heart bleeds every time I see a dog or a cat abandoned, abused or worse, killed. As an individual, I can only do so much - like adopting or fostering a dog, donating to animal shelters and volunteering.

For many years, I have always wondered what the government is doing to protect these poor creatures. There are a lot of stories where city dog pounds are just like "hell." The LGU workers assigned do not really care about the dogs. Many would even say that the dogs in the pound do not have food because the city does not have a budget. We also heard a lot of horror stories as to how the city dog pound euthanizes the dogs. They do not really care about how much pain they suffer. What matters is that they get rid of the dogs. For me, it was inhumane.

Don't you think these poor voiceless creatures also have the right to live? Are they the ones who should pay for the irresponsible actions of their previous owners? Why is the government not doing anything for their welfare?

However, today I found hope when I read the story circulating online about a dog slaughtered and eaten near the port area in Tondo, Manila. It is such a relief that this time the government did not turn a blind eye on the incident. Mayor Isko Moreno through some PNP men responded in less than an hour and the suspect was apprehended and is currently detained.

Source: Isko Moreno FB Page

Last July 26, Mayor Isko had a meeting with some animal rights group and he gave an assurance that "There will be a place for them" while showing the plans for a new city pound.

Here in the Visayas region. we learned that the newly elected Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas Jr. has ordered department heads to make Talisay City, Cebu a pet-friendly city.

Source: Office of the City Mayor
The huge open area at the Talisay City Hall is now open to our pet dogs and cats for them to get some exercise. Mayor Samsam believes that the welfare of our pets is also important. Pet owners just need to get a pet pass from the City Veterinary Office by showing their dog's unexpired vaccination records for them to enjoy the city hall grounds.

While researching, we also learned that the Talisay City LGU has been implementing other projects for our dearly beloved pets. They also offer FREE spay and neuter services (which is uncommon for most LGUs because they say it is expensive and there is no budget), FREE rabies vaccination, deworming and even vitamin supplementation.

They even celebrate a Pet Day headed by the City where there are free veterinary services, a pet blessing, pet fashion show and IEC campaigns on animal welfare.

Now we can't help but think: what if we have more government officials like this? Can the world be a safer place for both humans and animals? We currently do not have the answers but we are just so happy to find an ally with these local chief executives. We can now start hoping for the best for our furry friends.

If you know any outstanding local government initiatives for our pets, feel free to message us at www.facebook.com/mymetrolifestyle so, we can add and update this post.

Feel free to share this post to inspire others especially government officials. Thank you!

Top 6 Dog Movies You Shouldn't Miss

Every furparent would love to watch a dog film until the part where the dog dies. No matter how much we tell ourselves it's not true and just a fictional story, we all end up crying a bucket of tears. As they say, it is better for humans to die in the movie as long as the dog survives. Do you agree? (I'm so bad.)

This Sunday, Crumpy, Cheesecake, and Cinderelly would like to share the top 5 dog movies you shouldn't miss.

1. Marley and Me - Newlyweds John and Jenny Grogan played by Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston moved to Florida, where they are starting their life as a married couple. Then, the Grogans decide to adopt Marley, an adorable yellow Labrador pup. But Marley soon grows up to be a mischievous and naughty dog. Despite all the adventures, Marley still manages to bring out the best in John, Jenny and their growing family.

2. 8 Below - In the frozen wasteland of Antarctica features a tale about the bonds of friendship and loyalty. Three members of a scientific expedition, Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker), his friend Cooper (Jason Biggs) and an American geologist (Bruce Greenwood), must leave their beloved sled dogs behind after a devastating accident and increasingly perilous weather conditions. The dogs struggle to survive on their own during the harsh Antarctic winter.

3. Hachi: A Dog's Tale - A college professor played by Richard Gere finds a dog on a train station and forms a lasting bond with him. (This is a personal favorite and this is based on a true story.)

4. Max - A highly trained service dog (Max) was too traumatized to remain in service after his handler U.S. Marine Kyle Wincott was killed in Afghanistan. He was instead adopted by Kyle's family back in the U.S. Kyle's teenage brother Justin (Josh Wiggins) has problems of his own and doesn't want the animal. However, Max may be Justin's only chance to learn what really happened to his brother. Justin and Max begin to bond and set out to unravel and find out more about the mystery of Kyle's death.

5. Legally Blonde 2- Yes! You read that right. It is not purely a dog movie but this movie about Elle Woods (played by Resse Witherspoon) is about her journey to Washington, D.C., to have her say about animal rights, but is ignored by every politician she encounters and quickly learns that the White House can be even tougher to navigate than the Ivy League. It is a great reminder to all of us to be the voice for all our dogs and other animals.

6. A Dog's Purpose - This 2017 movie is all about finding the meaning of a dog's existence in the lives of its humans. It is a story about the unbreakable bond between his dog and owner as they find each other again after multiple reincarnations. This movie will give us hope to the reunited once again with our lost angels.

Some of these movies have really sad endings but still, they are worth watching. Just like having a dog, we all know that due to their short lifespan, owning one will lead to a major heartbreak. However, an opportunity to be with them no matter how short it is definitely worth the pain.

Ending this post with my favorite quote from Anatole France, "Until you have loved an animal, a part one's soul remains unawakened."

Thus, we are long-term consumers of Pedigree products from Denta Stix to Wet and Dry Dog Food. Cheesecake, Cinderelly, and Crumpy simply love them. By the way, this is not a sponsored post.  We just want to share that Pedigree is giving out goodie bags to all furbabies.

Reasons Why Moms Are The Best + Cheesecake's New Litter

Mother's Day is a few months away but recent events made me realize how amazing moms are. A few weeks ago, my adopted furbaby, Cheesecake gave birth to 4 puppies. The delivery had some complications wherein the umbilical cord was not cut for 2 puppies and the last puppy got stuck for more than 12 hours. These made the puppies stressed and weak that they require extra care.

Taking care of newborn puppies is no different taking care of a human baby. One must make sure they have a clean environment, no one gets sat on, gets enough milk and they never get cold. Plus, they have to be breastfed every 2 hours. The bottom line is - as a furparent to newborn puppies, I could not afford to sleep because I have to watch them closely no matter how tired I was.

Just like moms - the responsibility is 24/7. No dayoffs or breaks. No matter how tired or sick they are. They have to attend to their children. This is the top reason why moms are simply the best. Their unconditional love for their babies (human or not) is so huge that they put their personal needs aside to attend to their family first.

I realized that it is not easy being a mom. Moms give everything that they can to finish and fulfill their responsibilities. An 8-hour of sleep is indeed a luxury and one cannot afford to get sick. I even called my Mama and to ask her if it is really like this wherein I get no sleep. Plus, there are unending needs of your "babies" while household chores are piling up. I asked her how did she cope with everything. My mom just laughed and told yes, it's like that.

Can you imagine life without mom? Watch this video and find out.

Tag your moms/ wife below and let them how much you appreciate them.

Letting The Dogs Out At The Spa

If you are like most pet owners, your dog is a member of the family. Treat your furry friend to a few hours at a pet spa in Plymouth MI. While there, the pet can receive a bath with luxurious products that leave the coat soft and shiny as well as other special services that will make your dog feel loved and relaxed.

A pet spa is more than just a place where you can leave your pet so that you can go on vacation or if you need someone to watch your pet while you're at work. This is a facility that takes the time to get to know your pet in a way that makes it comfortable. You don't have to worry about who is taking care of your dog as the staff is trained and qualified to work with animals of almost all breeds and sizes. Staff members will make sure your dog is settled before doing any kind of work on the skin, coat or nails.

When your pet is at a day spa, there is sure to be a lot of fun with other animals. It offers a way for the dog to get out of the house and away from closed quarters, playing outside with other dogs that are of similar sizes. Staff members can help dogs interact with each other, showing them the social skills that they need to play in a proper manner. If your dog is a biter, then being around other dogs can show yours that it's not right to bite others. When your dog begins to bite, the other dog will quickly let it know that it hurts and that the behavior is not allowed.

A benefit of being at the spa is that the dog will be able to play for a few hours. There is time for a nap as well. Once the activity session is over, the dog can be bathed in a way that helps it feel relaxed. Nails can be clipped and painted, and the ears can be cleaned. A dog spa can provide enjoyment for both the pet and the owner in only a few short hours.

Puppies, Death and Moving On

I have been a pet parent to Crumpy for 10 years. Having only one furbaby at home, I was not really concerned about having puppies until the time we rescued and adopted, Cheesecake. (See separate story about the rescue, here.)

Well, we really did not want another puppy since we all know that having one is a lifetime commitment however, we can't really stop the "uncontrollable" especially that we have one male and one female dog. (You know what I mean.)

I just took note of the date when it happened so that at least if Cheesecake gets pregnant, I would know when to expect her delivery. Well, she really got pregnant and last March 5, 2016, was the big day. I was excited and scared at the same time. Cheesecake started panting and was very uneasy. She did not want to stay in the whelping box we prepared. (I guess it was my fault since we really did not train her to stay there and she's so used staying on the little bed we made for her inside our room.) I was so lost and have no idea what will happen. Val had to go to work so technically, I am the only adult or let's say human at home. I have been researching online on what to expect, dangers and what should I do in case of an emergency. I even contacted my cousin, Macil whose a doctor and my friend Jen who recently had a dog that gave birth. I was like a husband outside the delivery room -- excited, scared and helpless as I hear Cheesecake crying, panting while giving birth.

She gave birth at exactly 12:36 AM. I wasn't sure if it's a boy or girl and was undecided with a name. We wanted it to start with the Letter C just like his parents, Crumpy and Cheesecake. I was so happy to see the little puppy beside Cheesecake though I won't be able to hold her yet. I was so contented watching her from afar. I did not sleep that night. I just wanted to make sure that they are both safe and okay.

It is a wonderful feeling of seeing another bundle of joy coming into our life. Our family is getting bigger. I did not care about our plan not to have another dog anymore. More barks mean more fun. I was ready for another lifetime commitment to see those little toes grow, watch those little eyes open kiss that red nose (just like Crumpy's) and give this little furbaby a life that she deserves.

Day 2 was as just as wonderful. I was very concerned about the welfare of Cheesecake. She was still heavily panting and I was so worried since I read stories about placenta did not go out or other pregnancy complications. Good thing, Cheesecake was eating and drinking well. We found out that furbaby was a girl yet still do not have a name. We decided to call her "Baby" for the time being. She was okay and got all the attention of Cheesecake since there are no other puppies. We moved them to the living room since it was warmer. Unfortunately, Cheesecake was crying all night since she was not used to sleeping away from us. We all decided to sleep downstairs instead and slept together. This is what Ohana is all about. Well, I was not really able to sleep well. A little bit of sound and I would wake up immediately. I was just so worried and scared.

Then the worst thing happened, it was the afternoon of March 7 when we lost "Baby" It was only a few hours that I was not really paying attention since I had to work. I work from home but had to send out some emails for a client so I stayed inside the room leaving them outside. Perhaps it was after 2 hours that I was not able to check on them when I saw "Baby" lifeless. I was shouting and crying at the same time. I did not know what to do during emergency situations. I did not know what was wrong but I lost our little furbaby.

It was painful. When you treat someone as your family, it would not matter how long you had each other. She was able to capture my heart immediately. I cried and cried. No matter how painful it is, I realized that you still have to do what you have to do. I looked for a box where we can place her. I made a little bed inside the box and placed her there like a little angel sleeping. However, I asked Val to close the box because I can't do it myself. We decided to bury her in the garden the same night. Lit a candle, placed some flowers and offered her a prayer.

I was lost. It was heartbreaking. Val had to work that night. I had to deal this on my own. There was a feeling of guilt. I felt I did not do enough for her. I was thinking of what I have done wrong. Tears were just overflowing. It was one of the saddest moments of my life.

Whenever I think of her, I still cry. They say that crying is part of moving on and moving on is not about forgetting. It is all about acceptance of what happened while keeping the memories inside your heart.

I am writing this since it's been a month since we lost her. In memory of my little furbaby, please remember that you will always be loved. Have fun in the rainbow bridge.

Same Dog, Different Owner

I have always believed that a dog's life is dependent on its owner. The same dog may look different given a different owner. Some are lucky to have such good parents that treat them as family while others have owners who are just good at the beginning and simply abandon them as they age or get sick.

As an animal welfare advocate, we had always encouraged genuine dog lovers to adopt rather than shop. A massive campaign to give these poor furbabies another shot in life. Hoping that they can truly find their happy ever after with their new owner.

On a personal note, I honestly do not want another pet to take care of. I understand the big responsibility it entails. From the basic needs such as food and water to medical and emotional needs, being a furparent is not an easy job. I was contented being a mom to Crumpy.

Little did I know that another dog would be part of our lives and we named her Cheesecake (because she looks like an Oreo cheesecake.)

Photo: after we gave her a haircut and a bath

This little girl was an abandoned dog roaming around the streets. She was very dirty, smelly and full of fleas when we got her. Not to mention starving too. It was a pity to just look at her and thus, even without plans, we knew we can't just leave her alone and we decided to bring her home.

We posted a lost and found ad to see if she had a previous owner however, for more than a month no one claimed her. We are thinking that she might have been abandoned. We brought her to the vet and she was diagnosed with an eye infection. She had been whining for a couple of days and not really eating well so, there is a big possibility that she is seriously ill and we are just waiting for other laboratory results to check her medical condition.

I realized that the hardest part of taking care of a rescue dog is that we do not have any history of her. We do not even know how old is she and we are just guessing everything. The only thing I am certain about is that Cheesecake deserves another and better shot in life.

Please help us pray for her fast recovery.

Pet Friendly Inn in Kalibo, Aklan

Our land travel from Manila to Bacolod by land was such a long trip that we decided to spend one night in Kalibo. Every parent's concern when traveling with their furbabies is that we do not have a lot of pet-friendly hotels and inns available in the country.

Given that our overnight stay was not really planned, I was not able to make any reservations nor even research a place where they would allow Crumpy to stay. I was just praying and wishing that we could find a place where dogs are allowed. We were so tired from the 18-hour trip and we badly need a place to crash.

Good thing, we saw the Garcia Legaspi Mansion Tourist Inn. It is not really a fancy place to stay but rather it is quite old already. Its location was great because it's in the heart of the downtown area. You can easily spot the place because it's just in the main street after you pass by the famous Kalibo bridge. It is beside Andok's which is open 24 hours so, you get to have decent food anytime you need without going far.

We got a room good for 3 persons for Php 1,350. I wanted an extra bed for Crumpy. The room was fully equipped with hot and cold shower, cable TV, aircon and comfortable beds. It was just what my little family needed.

It even has a small nook where we had our meal.

Recommendation: If you are looking for an affordable place to rest or if you have your pets with you then you might want to consider this tourist inn. The staff are very friendly. The only problem was that they do not have ample parking space. But generally, we had a good stay enough to energize us for the next day's trip.

Animal Neglect is a Form of Animal Cruelty.

Being an animal lover is not about wanting to have animals in your home. Being a true animal lover is being capable of taking good care of them, being responsible for their welfare FOREVER, keeping them safe and not neglecting them when they are old and sick. It does not end by giving them food and water but it is about spending time with them, making them feel secured and loved. We should always keep in mind that we are the only ones they have.

I started being a "REAL" pet parent almost 10 years ago. I was given a puppy and named him Crumpy.

This little furbaby had totally changed my view about animal welfare. I was able to see that they are not simply "animals." They are living creatures with feelings, needs and "mind." He can understand what is happening.  Being together made me realized these things.

Whenever we say we'll be going out to the mall, I can see and feel his excitement. He knows what "mall" "SM" and "alis." is all about.

He is sociable and wants to make new friends. So, it is never a good thing to just keep them inside a cage.

I have also read somewhere that dogs have self esteem so, it is very important for them to be clean and pampered because they will feel bad about themselves if they are dirty and smelly.

Just like us, Crumpy also gets excited with special occasions such as Christmas and birthdays. (By the way, Crumpy will be celebrating his birthday this Wednesday, April 8)

Lastly, He also gets tired thus, it is very important that we provide them a good and comfortable place to sleep and rest.

I just realized that somehow they are just like humans only with four legs and cannot talk. Deep inside, there is a little creature that deserves to be loved and respected.

In time of the Animal Cruelty Prevention Month, I am inviting and encouraging everybody to take a stand against animal abuse. Let us start in our own backyards. Do you have a family, relative or friend who had been very busy and started neglecting their pets? Remind them about their pets. We should keep in mind that animal neglect is a form of animal cruelty. You may not be kicking your dog or cat but if you don't feed them right and not taking good care of them, what's the difference between the two?

I am pleading for everyone to become responsible pet owners. This responsibility is FOREVER. If you are not ready for the next 10-15 years to be with your pet. Please don't get one. They may be very cute and irresistible as a puppy but be prepared that they will not stay that way forever. Keep in mind that both young and old dogs give us the same love and joy.

If you have a big heart and can do this, there are a lot of dogs in the pound who are waiting for you. There are a lot of animal welfare groups that you can support through by adopting, fostering, volunteering and donating.

Here are some organizations in the Philippines or you may check local organizations in your area.

Let us become the voice for the voiceless. If you see something wrong in your local communities, please do something about. Please do not just keep quiet and ignore. Urge your local government to help in protecting them.
Remember: We are the only ones they got!
